Theyyam is a ritual art form popular in North Kerala (Kannur & Kasaragod district) so ancient it predates Hinduism in Kerala, though it has since adapted to include Hindu elements. It’s believed to be thousands of years old, from a time when tribal serpent/heroic/mother goddess was the most common form of worship. Some rituals involve blood sacrifices. Music is also an important part of a Theyyam ritual. Traditional instruments such as the Chenda, Elathalam, Kurumkuzal, and Veekkuchenda are used during the performance. The Legends behind most of the Theyyam are of the heroic sacrifice/martyr against untouchability, cast system, male chauvinism etc... 

Theyyam performances can be seen from November to May every year. The peak season is December to February. There are over 400 different Theyyams, each with its own music, style and choreography. Theyyam is mainly performed by males, except the Devakoothu Theyyam which is performed by women. Most of the Theyyam have 3 types of performances Thottam – The dancer along with the drummers recites the particular ritual song, which describes the myths and legends, of the particular Theyyam , Vellattam – light version and Theyyam – complete version.
